The official Beyond These Stars game soundtrack, by composer Benedict Nicols, is now available on Bandcamp!
Benedict is an Ivor-nominated and award-winning composer for games, based in the UK. His projects include the indie games OMNO, Bulwark, The Falconeer (BAFTA-nominated best debut game) and Before We Leave, the first Balancing Monkey Games release.
We asked Benedict to tell us a little about his work composing the Beyond These Stars score.
‘The music for Beyond These Stars is an organic development of the music from its prequel, Before We Leave, in line with how the story plays out. The peeps love their music and still play in their homes, having taken their simple instruments and jaunty melodies with them when they first boarded, and there are plenty of new happy and sad tunes tucked away.’
‘Meanwhile the non-diegetic music is a much larger amount of material… because they are now out amongst the stars! The further they travel, the more the music evolves. It features complex generative sections that accompany the player in their busy work of building and management, and discrete tracks that reflect their developing new technologies, meeting aliens, the beauty of space travel as they gaze upon the constellations, and discovering the wonders of the cosmos. As their eyes widen on their intergalactic adventure, so does the music in its instrumentation, drive and complexity.’

Sam, our Creative Director, says: 'I've been working with Benedict since 2019 when he created the incredible soundtrack for our first game, Before We Leave, which won the New Zealand Games Award for Best Audio thanks to his work on the score and James Deans work on sfx.
As Beyond These Stars has a strong narrative component, getting the right score in place was essential, and I knew Benedict was the person for the job. His soundtrack has added extra depth and emotion to the major narrative beats, helped give the different aliens and regions of space their own distinct personality, and given life to Peep buildings and celebrations.'
