It’s hard not to think about the underlying message of Before We Leave while watching the news about the Black Lives Matter protests. Our game is about learning from our ancestors' mistakes, and trying to do better in a new future. Racism and prejudice is woven into the foundations of our society here in Aotearoa (New Zealand) - it’s the same in America, and other parts of the world.
At Balancing Monkey Games, we stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, and we condemn police brutality and racial discrimination. We reject white supremacy. We understand the damaging actions of our predecessors, our leaders and even ourselves. We must help rectify these wrongs.
Our first step is making donations. We’ve made a $500 NZD donation to Purapura Whetu, a Māori-centric charity focusing on Health, Mental Health and Social Services based in Christchurch. We’ve also donated $500 NZD to ActBlue’s Black Lives Matter fund. As a company and individuals we understand our privilege and know that we need to continue learning, making change where we can, and using resources to help the underprivileged.
