About Us:
Balancing Monkey Games is an award-winning Kiwi game development studio based in Dunedin (Ōtepoti), Aotearoa New Zealand. We are the creative minds behind Before We Leave, a strategic, chill city-building game. We’re currently working on its sequel, the city-builder-on-a-Space-Whale Beyond These Stars, which is close to release.
We are seeking a Community Manager to join our team and help us take care of and grow our strong, kind, and engaged community for the upcoming Early Access launch of our game Beyond These Stars, through until 3 months after the full version launch.
We would prefer a candidate based in Dunedin, NZ. We will consider remote work within NZST (NZ Standard Time), or AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time) for the right candidate.

Job Description:
As our Community Manager, you will possess strong written and verbal skills with experience working in Discord and other forum-style platforms. You’ll be comfortable creating long-form content for YouTube and our website (such as developer blogs). You’ll be excited to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, and you’ll play a vital role in engaging and building trust with our community of players and ensuring their voices are heard. You’ll also be able to identify trends, report on player sentiment, and remain measured in the face of difficult situations. Most importantly, you’ll be responsible for cultivating a positive, inclusive, and vibrant community for our games and studio!

Responsibilities:
Community Engagement & Strategy:
- Act as the primary point of contact for our player community across various platforms, including Discord, Steam forums, and reviews.
- Foster a welcoming, trusting and inclusive community environment where players feel valued and heard.
- Respond to player inquiries, feedback, and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Strategise and execute community events, discussions, and contests.
- Liaise with stakeholders for communicating important development milestones and marketing beats.
Content Creation:
- Create and curate content to share with the community, including email newsletters, blog posts, FAQs, and occasional video updates.
- Collaborate with our Social Media Manager and Publisher to develop engaging content that resonates with the community.
Feedback and Communication:
- Compile and summarise player feedback to provide insights to the development team.
- Serve as the voice of the community within the studio, communicating player concerns, suggestions, and sentiments to the development team.
- Collaborate with developers to provide updates on upcoming features and game improvements.
Moderation:
- Leading a small team of moderators, and recruiting new moderators from community when needed.
- Enforce community guidelines to maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere.
- Monitor and moderate community discussions to prevent toxicity and ensure a safe environment for all players.
- Track and analyse community sentiment to understand player trends and other pressure points.
- Observe community trends - both within our own community and across the wider games industry.
Qualifications:
Requirements:
- At least 2 years experience in community management
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- An interest in games, and a deep understanding of the gaming community
- Experience using Discord and Discord bots, and similar sites and tools
- Able to generate engaging content using Photoshop or Premiere (or equivalent software)
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle player feedback constructively
- Enthusiastic, approachable, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
- Australia/New Zealand time zone
Nice to haves:
- At least 1 shipped title or experience working a game launch
- Experience authoring reports relating to community sentiment
- Experience streaming on Twitch
- Experience with Mailchimp or equivalent services
- Experience using Steam, its forums, and Steamworks
- Dunedin resident preferred
